are calling for yet another winter storm to hit the same area this weekend. danielle nottingham, cbs news, reagan national airport, arlington, virginia. >>> around here, the rain may have cleared out for the time being. but it left behind quite a mess. this is the great highway in san francisco where excess water forced the closure of the southbound lanes. but it's the rainwater you can't see that could pose the biggest danger. mark sayre is with homeowners keeping their eyes on saturate hillsides. >> reporter: in the past 25 years, 100 californians have died as a result of landslides and the bay area already a high risk area. that risk only goes up the more rain we get. you don't have to look far to see the signs all of over the bay area of plenty of small landslides like this one in the hills of alameda county or this one along nearby morrison canyon road which remains closed due to the ongoing landslide danger. according to the california geological survey, there is no specific data that can predict when any particular hillside will give way. >> the longer you go into the season, the g

, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >>> we now know it was an 11- year-old boy from daly city that is killed in a police pursuit in pasadena on christmas day. police and fbi agents were conducting a gang sweep when they started following a car that committed a traffic violation. the suspects took off and eventually hit a minivan carrying a family from daly city. an adult and 11-year-old were killed in the car. three others in the minivan were injured, as well. four suspects are arrested and face murder charges. >>> the search is on for suspects in a gang-related shooting in south san jose last night short live before 9 p.m. in the area off serenade and lullaby drives. officers safe the suspect started an altercation with the victim, shot him and then took off. the victim taken to the hospital, no word yet on his condition. >>> apparently the smell is what led to the discovery of a ghoulish plot. two people are under arrest now for what was found in the backyard of a home on warren avenue in vallejo. it was a badly decomposed body. richard romer of alameda died two years ago at the age of 56.

and this time around, again, it looks like it's mainly going to be just rain. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. >>> at least six deaths are blamed on the storm system in the southeast. the trouble with tornados in hard-hit arkansas, nearly 200,000 people lost power, and the governor declared a statewide emergency. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: snow blanketed parts of the midwest and northeast. falling and blowing so hard it was difficult for road crews to keep up. as much as 2 feet of snow could fall in some areas. driving was treacherous. this car overturned in frederick, maryland. some trying to get home after christmas encountered dangerous near whiteout conditions. >> all of a sudden, we hit indiana, and we ran into this crazy snowstorm. >> reporter: well over a thousand flights have been canceled across the country and many others delayed including here at raggal international airport. >> i thought we were going to die. >> reporter:residents of mobile, alabama, heard what they thought sound like a freight train and a storm system touched down. >> we hopped into the cent

to the "fiscal cliff" when doing your christmas shopping? many americans did because cbs 5 reporter mike sugerman tells us retail numbers weren't good. >> reporter: i'm at union square which is mobbed. it's swinging. i spent the day here and it didn't get active until a couple of hours ago and as i look around, i don't see a lot of people with bags. i'm not sure they're shopping. but the retailers really hope they will because because they are in a lot of hurt. susan wanted to buy toys for her grandchildren but couldn't manage to go to a toy store. visions of the sandy hook elementary school massacre were in her head. >> i couldn't take the shopping and seeing all the little kids 5-year-olds, 6-year-olds, particularly saddens me. >> reporter: she bought gift cards instead and none of the extra stuff she might have been found being in stores. december retail is a bummer in the news and stores. >> this is not at all a good holiday season for the retailer. >> reporter: it could have been for the customer. >> 495. our price is 179 and an additional 10% now. >> reporter: and no one is buying it? >> no

this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> axelrod: good evening. scott's off tonight. i'm jim axelrod. a lot of holiday plans are out the window tonight due to a powerful storm system that stranded travelers on highways and at airports. it's blamed in at least six deaths. in the south, there are reports that 41 tornadoes have touched down since yesterday. one of them sheered off the front of the trinity episcopal church in mobile, alabama. luckily, no one was injured. the same system brought a blizzard to parts of the midwest, forcing the cancellation of more than 1,400 flights. tonight, it's headed to the northeast. winter storm warnings have already been posted. troy kehoe of our cbs station in indianapolis begins our coverage. troy? >> reporter: well, jim, here in bloomington, indiana, we've already seen 11.5 inches of snow so far, and it is still coming down with blizzard conditions here in the midwest. this has been a two-day storm leaving much of the country paralyzed. blinding snow with wind gusts topping 35 miles an hour have created whiteout conditions in the p

:29. >>> we're following some breaking news in walnut creek. a suspect is dead after being shot by police. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at police headquarters in walnut creek where they are going to give us an update at any time. >> reporter: th captain is here to give us an update on this officer-involved shooting. but here's a run down of what happened. earlier, we were told around 3:30 police got reports of shots fired near a home on creekside drive by las lomas high school. shortly after, officers got a 911 call of someone screaming on the line. now, we don't know who put in the call. the officers were able to respond within minutes. now, we're still unsure of the circumstances that led to the shooting but they were able to confirm some information. >> there is one suspect that is deceased. i will not release his name as of yet nor any other details. the scene is secure. and we are not looking for any outstanding suspects. >> reporter: we don't know how many shots were fired but no officers were hurt in the shooting. we know officers are at the scene gathering evidence. we are told it i

" the fight as come to your neighborhood dry cleaner. >> reporter: who would have thought the simple act of dropping off your dry cleaning would involve international politics? >> most of all the hangers we buy today are made in vietnam or china. >> reporter: the u.s. commerce department says they have flooded the market, forcing all u.s. manufacturers out of business. so the feds slapped a 187% tariff on the imported hangers, more than doubling the cost to dry cleaners. >> that certainly did drive the price of hangers up. we were paying probably 4-5 cents a hanger. now it's anywhere from 8-10 cents a hanger. >> reporter: customers noticed. >> they never like it, but it's the cost of supplies. you have to do it. >> reporter: hangers are hardly worth harping about. the real cost increases are from utilities, chemical, and wages. >> reporter: when you run through nearly 10,000 hangers a month, every cent counts.

had to say on cbs. >> i don't think the nra is listening. i don't think that they understand. most americans would protect the 2nd amendment rights and yet agree with the idea that not every human being should own a gun. not every gun should be available for just anyone. >> all of our members agree with that. all that frank is doing, that poll he is talking about was paid for by mayor bloomberg's group. he's misrepresenting the views of the national rifle association. there are people who should not be allowed to purchase firearms and the law provides prohibiting such purposes. we have argued for years that those who have been adjudicating should be included on the instant check registry with the government so they can be denied the purchase of firearms. 23 states haven't even done that. >> i think he was talking about having armed guards in every school in america. he said most don't want more guns in school, they want less. he said some of your members even agree with that and you're not listening to them. >> there are 23,000 schools today that have armed guards. private schools
